The Challenge

A multinational corporate client approached us following a suspected security breach. Sensitive information had been compromised, and senior leadership feared that competitors might have gained access through electronic surveillance or network intrusion. With offices across several regions and key executives working remotely, the client faced a pressing question: were their workplaces and private homes vulnerable to surveillance or hacking?

For an organisation operating in a competitive global market, even a single leak of intellectual property, strategy documents, or internal communications could translate into millions of pounds in lost opportunities. The leadership team needed reassurance that their environments were secure and that their personnel could continue their work without fear of interception.

Our Approach

Conflict International deployed a highly trained Technical Surveillance Counter-Measures (TSCM) team to conduct a comprehensive sweep of the client’s offices. Every room, including executive suites, meeting rooms, and shared spaces, was checked for hidden audio and video recording devices. Advanced detection equipment was used to identify covert transmitters, frequency anomalies, and other indicators of illicit surveillance.

We extended the review to include network security assessments, analysing Wi-Fi configurations, password strength, and remote access protocols. Increasingly, corporate espionage is conducted not just through physical bugs but through weak network points. Ensuring that digital gateways were locked down was therefore as important as sweeping the physical space.

Recognising that many senior executives were working remotely, we also conducted on-site TSCM checks at their private residences. These checks included both physical sweeps and tailored advice on securing home networks, personal devices, and remote conferencing platforms.

The Investigation

Our work revealed vulnerabilities in both office and home environments. While no active listening devices were discovered, we identified outdated network configurations and password practices that posed a clear risk of intrusion. Remote access points had been set up in ways that, if exploited, could have allowed a determined actor to intercept communications or access confidential data.

Conflict International provided detailed recommendations, including revised password protocols, restricted use of personal devices on corporate networks, and tighter controls around remote access. Executives were briefed individually on personal risk-reduction measures, including awareness of phishing attempts and best practices for digital hygiene.

The Outcome

The client acted immediately on our recommendations. Network protocols were updated, password policies strengthened, and ongoing monitoring procedures were put in place. The executives expressed confidence in the knowledge that their homes and offices had been assessed to the highest standard of counter-surveillance.

Importantly, the client also recognised the need for proactive protection, not just reactive sweeps. We now conduct regular TSCM sweeps prior to sensitive meetings, whether held in corporate offices or external venues such as hotels or conference centres. In addition, a dedicated team remains on call to respond swiftly should the client have any new concerns about surveillance or hacking attempts.
